Chorralfest

The annual Penang Choralffest will enter its third year as the preeminent gathering of young and highly enthusiastic singers in Penang.
Begun as an outreach programme for local choirs and individual singers to engage in choral workshops and a large-scale concert, the festival - organized by the PESSOC (Penang State Symphony Orchestra & Chorus) - continues to attract and inspire many young talents. In fact, the huge number of participants this year tempts one to add another 'f' to the 'ff' (a musical term which means 'very loud') to the event name in an attempt to suggest the sheer power of sound these groups of singers will bring to the festival!
From the 5th to 7th of June, 11 school choirs (ten from across Penang Island and one from as far south as Kampar!) and the chorus members of PESSOC, will take part in intensive choral workshops and rehearsals. The festival will conclude with a concert. Under the tutelage of four distinguished tutors - Ms. Lisa Ho, Dr. Chan Cheong-Jan, Mr. Ian Tan and Ms. Leong Dee Yinn, participants will get to learn the art of singing choral works, which run the gamut from early music to experimental music. Singing techniques, however, are not the only skills they will get to burnish during these three days; they will also get to learn, among other things, the sense of rhythm in jazz music and dance movements for show-choir music.
In addition to the concert, which is bound to enrapture, there is an extra twist in store for the audience - they get to vote for the best choir for each piece from four different genres, hence the theme "Battle of Choirs". Showcased in this reality-show format, it is certain that the choirs will be more eager to impress the audience, who will decide who will be the last ones standing on the stage.
As a recapitulation, the concert will be held at 8pm on the 7th of June at Dewan Sri Pinang. Tickets are priced at RM10 and available for sale now. For further inquiries, please contact the PESSOC office: 04-262 2462 (from 9am to 1pm, Monday through Friday) or email: admin@pessoc.com.
